Kreios - Senior UI / UX Designer

Kreios is a small development outfit founded in 2007. With its main office located in the residential area of Sandweiler, the company at present consists of a multi-cultural team of 14 people.

Apart from working on our own product (MyTravelGuide, see further below), the primary business nowadays is the development and maintenance of a wide selection of custom-built software applications. Examples of typical Kreios projects include

  • A web-based product portal for an international vendor of fire extinguishing solutions (built on top of HTML5, AngularJS, Python, Django and AWS/Docker)
  • An all-in-one stage automation system for a large theatre, cruise-ships and opera houses (built on top of ANSI C/C++, IEC 61508 functional safety, a proprietary real-time embedded system, Unity3D, NodeJS and AngularJS)
  • A web portal for a local government agency (built on top of PHP and Symfony)
  • MyTravelGuide: A web-based service licensed to both outbound and inbound tour operators for the automatic generation of highly personalised travel guides on a per-booking basis (built on top of HTML5, Python, Django, Celery, RabbitMQ and speedata Publisher/LaTeX)

Company values:

Despite our different national and technical backgrounds (ranging from game development to mechanical engineering), we all essentially commit to the same core company values. These include

  • Be proud of and accept responsibility for the solutions you produce.
  • Always question everything you do. Never stop improving yourself.
  • Clearly communicate what you can and cannot do. Don't beat around the bush, you've got nothing to hide!
  • Don't shy away from the tough problems and difficult decisions. If it hurts, do it early and do it often.
  • Keep an open-minded and constructive attitude towards people who don't share your opinions and viewpoints. This is not a game you can win alone!
  • Keep things simple! Technology is not an end in itself, but a tool for solving real-world solutions.
  • Often, finding the best solution to a problem doesn't only require the use of technology, but also understanding and potentially adapting the environment that shapes it. At Kreios, we therefore do more than just write software. If required, we'll also accept the responsibility for project management, do QA or coordinate the design of the applications overall UI. But above all, we use our brains during the process. Instead of just following a given plan, we ask questions and dig deep until we really understand the underlying problem. Sometimes this results in new software being created. At other times though, suggesting e.g. the underlying business process to change may turn out to be a more cost-effective long-term solution.

That's where you come in...

Because we're a small and agile company, everyone gets to wear different hats. Yours would be:

User interface designer: You use the common tools of the trade (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InVision.com, Balsamiq) to create visually pleasing and user-friendly proposals for the user interfaces that we at Kreios are going to build for our clients.

Requirements engineer: You will run on-site workshops and meetings with the client (both presales and follow-up) in order to understand their needs and to identify the ideal user interface for them. You will communicate your ideas and suggestions directly with the client.

What's more

  • You are fluent in English, both written and spoken
  • You either don't need or already have an active work permit for Luxembourg
  • You have social skills and enjoy talking with people (remember: you'll be in direct contact with people on client-side most of the time)
  • You are willing to come in for an (unpaid) test day here at Sandweiler, where you'll be given some pet project to work on as well as the chance to meet up with the rest of our team

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Sounds interesting, but stressful. How often do you guys ask your people to work overtime? Be honest!
A: Apart from the occasional "crunch time" (the final days before a major deadline or product release), we normally never ask for people to work more than the agreed-upon 8 hours a day.

Q: What about the working hours at Kreios?
A: That mostly depends on the project you're working on at the time. The general rule of thumb is that everyone should try to be at the office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day.

Q: How often will I need to work directly on client site? Will I ever need to travel outside of Luxembourg?
A: Again, it depends. We typically try to do the bulk of the implementation work from Sandweiler and only schedule client site visits to elicit new requirements, reverse-engineer a legacy system or attend an occasional management meeting (although there have been some exceptions to this rule in the past). On the other hand, business trips outside of Luxembourg are very rare and attendance is strictly voluntary.

If this sounds like an interesting opportunity to you we are looking forward to receive your application and to answer any further questions you may have!
